About the programme

Our Schools, Our World is a pioneering environmental education initiative that empowers schools to embed sustainability and climate action into every aspect of school life. Originally developed as Our City, Our World by Brighton & Hove City Council, the programme is now being rolled out nationally.

Its mission is to harness the power of education to advance environmental literacy, social responsibility, and community engagement—helping young people and educators contribute to a fairer, greener future. In Devon, the programme is delivered by Planet & People CIC in partnership with the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere.

What we are doing

We support schools to meet the Department for Education’s Strategy for Sustainability and Climate Change by providing practical tools, training, and ongoing guidance. The programme begins with green leadership training for senior leaders, followed by themed sessions, twilight workshops, and bespoke support across four terms. Schools receive resources, networking opportunities, and impact reports to track progress and celebrate achievements. Our approach is holistic—covering curriculum, operations, and culture - so sustainability becomes part of everyday school life.

Benefits

The Our Schools, Our World programme delivers measurable benefits for schools, pupils, and communities:

  • Whole-school transformation: Moves sustainability from the responsibility of one passionate teacher to a shared, school-wide commitment, supported by leadership, staff, and governors.

  • Curriculum integration: 94% of participating schools have embedded green milestones into their curriculum, ensuring environmental education is woven into everyday learning.

  • Leadership and capacity building: 95% of schools have delivered whole-school training, empowering staff to lead climate action confidently.

  • Practical impact: Schools have developed Climate Action Plans, reduced energy use, and launched initiatives such as eco-refill shops, sustainability fairs, and outdoor learning programmes.

  • Student empowerment: Pupils take active roles as sustainability ambassadors, leading projects, hosting community events, and creating innovative solutions—from energy audits to creative campaigns.

  • Community engagement: The programme strengthens links between schools and local organisations, fostering collaboration and shared responsibility for climate action.

  • Scalable success: Across five hubs, 90 schools have engaged, impacting over 32,000 pupils and 5,000 staff, with clear frameworks for continued progress.

Schools report increased confidence, stronger networks, and a renewed sense of hope for the future—making sustainability a core part of education and culture.
