Lockdown Lows - Let’s Find The Fun!

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

FOR PLANET AND PEOPLE

Jess: I’m pretty sure that all of us are feeling the pinch of lockdown on our mental health, or at the very least, on our usual cheery demeanours. I for one, am certainly feeling it a challenge to be interesting and need a bit of a morale boost! So, for the sake of all of us, as the (often bleak) month of February approaches, let’s put our heads together and come up with some tips and ideas for a fun Feb, the month which starts to signify the growing season, the coming of Spring and a whole lot of love too.

Family fun for you and the kids:

  • Embrace the rain and go puddle jumping!

  • Get involved in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

  • Learn a new skill together; painting, knitting, handstands.

  • Set challenges for you all to complete; how fast you can run 50m? How many hedgerow species can you identify? How many bird calls can you recognise?

Fun for the parents:

  • Allow yourself a date night and think of ways to make it light-hearted and laugh together whether it takes a carpet picnic, a game of twister or a homemade facemask session.

  • Play a board game together.

  • Cook a special meal together, something you wouldn’t normally attempt perhaps? Fresh pasta, gourmet burgers, tagine, fancy starters or a dessert selection.

  • Have a cocktail evening - choose a cocktail and make it together. Get dressed up smartly and watch a themed movie.

Fun with friends:

  • Have a video call with a few friends that you haven’t seen in ages. Jazz it up with an art or baking challenge or a virtual tour of their house and garden.

  • Write a letter, with pen and paper, include a riddle or a game; I have some friends who partook in a game of postal chess which went on for years!

  • Send a care package to someone who is struggling.

  • Do something positive for your community, like litter-picking, planting summer bulbs or sweet peas, and encourage your friends and neighbours to do it too.

  • Decorate your front door and encourage others to do it too, sharing your pictures and creativity!

Fun for you:

It’s tricky to make time for yourself, especially when you’ve got kids and a household and work and home-schooling etc to tend to but it is ever so important to give yourself a bit of time for you, it doesn’t have to be blatant self-care, but just something for you to have time out.

  • Pick up and play that dusty instrument you haven’t tried for years. You might surprise yourself!

  • Introduce yourself to some new music and really get to know it.

  • Do regular exercise sessions. The ‘Workout For Women’ app gives tips for seven minute workouts! You’ll feel better after that I’m sure.

  • Choose a topic you’d like to know more about and study it, get to know it, become an armchair expert.

  • Run yourself a hot bath, treat yourself to that fancy bubble bath or a few drops of essential oils, light a candle, read a book.

  • Get out for nature walks - have a little time on your own!

If you’re needing a bit of motivation, a new (and easy) challenge for all the family and some structure, creativity, exploration of the mind and to do a bit more for the environment, look no further than Planet Action Kit. February’s theme is ‘Reduce Waste’ - discover ways that you can live more lightly and have an impact on your household’s eco-footprint.

FOR PLANET AND PEOPLE is a weekly blog conversation by ‘Planet & People’ to reflect our values and behaviours and encourage open conversation on topical eco-issues.
